Medicare Prescription Drug Plans

You can sign up for Part D Prescription Drug Plans along with other components of Medicare starting three months before your 65th birthday or if you are under 65 and eligible for Medicare. It’s important to do this on time because there may be a permanent premium surcharge for enrolling after your initial enrollment period if you don’t have equivalent drug coverage from another source, such as a retiree or employer plan.

Medicare Part D plans help cover the cost of the FDA-approved prescription medications not covered by Medicare Part A or Part B. Covered drugs are based on the specific plan you choose and the plan’s formulary or “covered drug list”.

Due to changes that could happen each year with Medicare, it is important to review your Part D coverage, especially if you started taking new prescriptions. You can switch plans during the annual enrollment period, which runs from October 15th to December 7th each year.
