Medicare

Medicare is a federal health insurance program that covers a variety of health care expenses for qualifying individuals. The program is available to Washington seniors who are 65 years of age or older, as well as adults with certain qualifying medical conditions or permanent disabilities such. At Horizon Insurance Agency LLC we work closely with individuals and families throughout Puyallup and Shelton to provide solutions to all of their Medicare needs.

There are four distinct parts to the Medicare program. They are Part A, Part B, Part C, and Part D. Part A and Part B are often referred to as Original Medicare while Part C is commonly referred to as Medicare Advantage. Let’s take a look at each individual part in more detail.

Medicare Part A

Medicare Part A is hospital insurance that covers inpatient hospital care, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some in-home health care services. There is no premium associated with this part of Medicare if you have worked at least 10 years and have paid Medicare taxes during that time. If you do not meet these requirements, you can still qualify, but you will need to pay a premium.

Medicare Part B

Medicare Part B is medical insurance that covers non-hospital related expenses. This includes certain doctor’s visits, outpatient care, blood tests, certain medical supplies, and various preventative services.  There is a monthly premium that will be due for Medicare Part B. For those with low income, Medicaid can help to cover these premiums.

Medicare Part C

Medicare Part C, or Medicare Advantage, is Medicare coverage offered through private insurance companies. In most cases, a Medicare Advantage plan will include each coverage type in a single plan. Medicare Advantage plans can include options such as Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO), Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO), or Medicare Medical Savings Account Plans. Medicare Part D is typically included as part of a Medicare Advantage plan as well.

Medicare Part D

Medicare Part D is optional coverage for prescription drugs that can be added to Medicare Parts A and B. This optional coverage is available through private insurance companies approved by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Medicare Advantage plans generally include Medicare Part D coverage as part of the plan.

Depending on your unique situation, Medicare Parts A and B may not cover all of your medical needs. Medicare Supplement Insurance, or Medigap coverage, is often available at an additional cost to cover the gaps and expenses not covered under Medicare Parts A and B. Our Medicare experts can help you determine if supplemental insurance makes sense for you.
